RV planner: Are you planning your family’s RV road trip for this year? Here are some facts about traveling in an RV this year.
In a recent survey released in Summer 2022 by Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (“RVIA”) showed that 65 million Americans plan to take an RV trip in the next 12 months. It went on to say that 37% of American travelers plan on taking an RV trip in 2023. The top reasons for RV travel are exploring the outdoors and flexibility to work from home. Spending quality time together has always been a top reason to take an RV trip, however, flexibility in working / schooling remote is a quickly growing reason as well.

The survey also showed the costs of travel is a reason for people planning an RV trip. If you don’t factor in the cost of owning an RV – the cost of an RV vacation is about half of that compared to hotels, and one third less than a road trip in a car plus hotel costs. These savings make RVing appealing. Traveling in an RV makes it a little bit easier to do on a budget as well. It’s fairly predictable once you have all the information such as cost of the rental, campground nightly fees, average cost of gas per gallon, and average groceries for your family. One of the great perks of RV travel is that you can cook in the RV and don’t have to eat out for every meal like you would if you were staying in a hotel.
Interestingly, the survey showed that interest in RVing overall comes from the younger age groups. Ages 27-40 make up the majority of age groups planning on taking an RV trip this year. Millennials travel 30% more than previous generations and view vacations as a way of life. An RV makes it easier to take more frequent trips like weekend getaways.

So, where is everyone going? Travel destinations on the RVIA survey indicate that 60% of RV travelers will be going to National Parks. This is not surprising as National Parks are the top destinations for RVers. Followed quickly by State Parks, again very normal. After these destinations the most popular were: Family Visits, Beach, Lake and Mountain destinations. The most popular National Parks will always be Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Zion, Glacier, Great Smoky Mountains, Rocky Mountain, Acadia & Grand Teton. If you’d like to go to any of these parks, plan early as campgrounds book up quickly.
